  • When is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road open? 
    The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is open from the start of May until the start of November. All the information about opening times can be found here

  • Is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road open in the winter too?  
    No, in the winter months – from the start of November until the start of May – the high Alpine road is closed since it is not driveable due to snow levels.

  • Can the Grossglockner High Alpine Road be driven on at any time? 
    No, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road may only driven on during the season, at specific opening times – the road can be driven on during these time blocks:

1st June to 31st August 5:30 to 21:00 Last entry 20:15 
From 1st September 6:00 to 19:30 Last entry 18:45

 

  • Where does the area that requires a fee to be paid begin - the 'toll' area?  
    Our cash points are in Ferleiten/Fusch on the Grossglockner Road (Salzburg) and in Heiligenblut am Grossglockner (Carinthia). The Grossglockner High Alpine Road can be accessed and exited from both directions.

  • How much does a ticket for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road cost? 
    Ticket prices depend on how long your journey is and the vehicle you are using on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. All the ticket prices can be seen here. 

  • What type of tickets are there? 
    There are various types of tickets available, depending on which vehicle you are using and how long you are on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road for. Day- and multi-day tickets for cars, motorbikes and E-vehicles, as well as season and round-trip tickets are available. All the information about our various tickets can be found here.

  • How long is day ticket valid?   
    A dayticket is only valid on the calender day on which it has been issued, and during opening hours.   

  • Is it possible to drive to Heiligenblut or Zell am See and back again the same day with a day ticket?  
    Yes, you can use a day ticket that is linked to your licence plate details to travel to and from Salzburg to Heiligenblut on the same day. It is also possible to travel from Carinthia to Zell am See and back again with a day ticket that is linked to your licence plate details; the cash points can be passed as often as you like on the day of your excursion. 

  • With the Grossglockner High Alpine Road day ticket can you drive up and down as often as you like?  
    With a day ticket, you can drive on the road as often as you like on the day the ticket has been issued.

  • Can you pay the additional fee for a second day, when you are paying for your first ticket?
    An additional day ticket for a second day for your car and motorbike can only be purchased directly at cash points, and upon presentation of the day ticket that is linked to your licence plate details which was used for the first journey, made in the same calendar year. The ticket for the second day cannot be purchased at the same time as the initial ticket.  

  • What types of multi-day tickets are there?  
    There is a 3-week ticket and a season ticket – for cars and motorbikes respectively – these are only valid for private vehicles. All information about our various tickets can be found here.

  • Is the ticket needed when you have already driven in via the cash pointin?  
    Essentially no, since the ticket is only required to drive in via the cash point. However, if you leave the area where a fee is payable and want to drive in via the toll area again the same day, you will need the ticket again. Upon presentation of a day ticket you also get a discounted ticket for another journey during the season. However, the licence plate details must be identical. 

  • What does it cost if I only want to drive on Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe? 
    You can use a day ticket to visit the Grossglockner High Alpine Road from all directions. There are no tickets for partial sections. 

  • Do you still have to pay the full tariff if you are only 'driving through' and don't stop anywhere along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? 
    With a day ticket, you can travel any direction on the Großglockner High Alpine Road. There are no tickets available for just a passing through.

  • With a season ticket, can you drive on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road even before the opening time? And later in the evening?  
    No, even with a season ticket, you may only drive on the road during opening hours.  

  • When leaving the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, do you have to pay again if you have purchased a day ticket, but stayed the night in a lodge or hotel along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?
    No, if you are staying the night in accommodation along the road you do not have to pay any extra to exit – even for a longer stay. 

  • Can a ticket that has expired still be used? 
    Yes, your ticket will not become invalid even after expiry, it can still be used.  

  • Are season tickets linked to named persons and licence plates? 
    Season tickets are not linked to named persons, but to specific licence plates. Upon payment at the cash point, you will receive a season ticket that is linked to your licence plate. 
Online-Tickets
  • Does a ticket have to be purchased online in advance?  
    No, that is not strictly necessary. Tickets may also be purchased at cash points at the road just before you access. 

  • Is there an advantage to purchasing at ticket online? 
    If you purchase online your ticket for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road before you get here, you enjoy a 10 percent discount on souvenirs in all the Großglockner shops and other selected shops along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road!
     
  • You purchased a ticket online (print@home), but not received an e-mail. What can you do??  
    Please contact info@grossglockner.at or +43 662  873673, stating your booking number.

  • Can the ticket displayed on my mobile?  

    A ticket from our online Grossglockner shop may also be displayed on your smartphone. The ticket QR code must be readable. Please note that your online ticket or QR code should be downloaded in advance, to avoid any unnecessary queuing at the cash points. Be mindful that there may also be Internet outages or connection problems in the mountains.  

  • Is there a 'fast line' for online tickets?  
    No, there is no ‘fast line’. Your online ticket can only be used at cash point lanes that are open.  

  • Can discounted tickets für E-vehicles also be purchased in the online shop?  

    No, discounted tickets for E-vehicles are not available to purchase in the online Grossglockner shop. These tickets are only available directly at cash points on the Grossglockner High Alpine road. Please inform staff at the cash points about your E-vehicle. Your ticket cannot be changed retrospectively. 

  • Can gift vouchers for a day ticket be individually designed?
    Yes, gift vouchers can be individually designed with a photo motif and a greeting in our online Grossglockner shop.  

DISCOUNTS
  • Is a discount available for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road for people who have a disability?  
    Yes, a discount is available if the vehicle driver has a disability card stating an invalidity level of 50% or more. This discount is only available right at the cash point.

  • Is there a discount with SalzburgerLand Card? 
    Yes, a day ticket for the Großglockner High Alpine Road is included in the SalzburgerLand Card too. There is a small surcharge for people in the vehicle who are not SalzburgerLand Card holders. Please note that if the SalzburgerLand Card has already been used for a 24-hour SalzburgCard, it cannot then be used for a Grossglockner High Alpine Road day ticket.

  • Is there a discount with the KärntenCard?Bekommt man mit der Kärnten Card eine Ermäßigung? 
    Yes, with the KärntenCard you get a discounted ticket for a car or a motorbike. 
      
  • Do you get a discount with a ÖAMTC-, ARBÖ- or ADAC-Card?  
    No discount is available at the Grossglockner High Alpine Road cash points for members of these automobile clubs. But, discounted advance sale tickets are available at all ÖAMTC-, ARBÖ- and ADAC points for cars and motorbikes on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. No membership required!

  • Is a motorway vignette valid on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?  

    No, a motorway vignette is only valid on motorways in Austria. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is not a motorway, it is a panoramic experience road.  

Driveability & Parking

Driveability
  • How do you know if the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is in a driveable state? 
    A large section of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is in high Alpine terrain. This means the weather and road conditions can change quickly. Whether, and to what extent, the road is driveable is always shown on the start page for the website. Please pay heed to the information shown!

  • Whot does the note 'snow chains' mean on the website?  
    Even though down in the valley at the cash point it may not seem like it, at times further up in the mountains there can be heavy snow fall. Snow chains are then required. For more detailed information, please contact the staff at our cash points directly.   

  • Can you drive a tractor on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?
    Yes, you can also drive a tractor on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. 

  • Can you drive a camper van/mobile home up to Edelweiss-Spitze?  
    Edelweiss-Spitze is not accessible to vehicles over a maximum weight of 3.5 tonnes. Journeys in a camper van/mobile home are not advisable. You can use the car park down from Fuscher Törl restaurant and head to the Edelweiss-Spitze on foot (walking time approx. 30 minutes).

  • Are there parking options availabe along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?  
    Plenty of free car parking spaces are available along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, where you can stop, have a break, enjoy the views, visit an exhibit, enjoy hikes or strolls.

  • Can vehicles be parked (for a longer period) at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe or another car park along the road, e.g. if you are doing a hike? 

    Yes, you can park your vehicle for a longer period at the car parks along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Please leave a note with information stating that you are on a multi-day hike or the like, on the dashboard behind the front windscreen.

  • What exhibits are there along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road - and where are they? 
    It is not just breath-taking views and unique natural experiences that are waiting for you along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, there is also a wide range of exhibitions at various locations which will keep you entertained, with many different themes ranging from natural phenomena to historic events.   • Is an extra entry fee payable for experience worlds and exhibits??  

    No, all the experience worlds, exhibitions, open-air shows and museums along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road are included in the ticket.  

  • When are the exhibitions open? 
    Opening times for exhibitions:  
    Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe visitor centre: daily 10:00 to 17:00 Uhr 
    all other exhibitis & shops: daily 9:00 to 17:00 Uhr 
ANIMAL KINGDOM
  • Can marmots be seen roaming freely on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?  
    Yes, marmots can be seen all along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road! Marmot colonies are located at Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe above the car park, when you stroll to the Wilhelm-Swarovski observation area and also beneath Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Marmots can also be see at Haus Alpine nature exhibition. Since marmots hibernate, it may be that the creatures will still be enjoying their winter slumber at the start of the season in May and at the end of the season in October. Find out more about the animals you might see along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road here.

  • Can ibex be seen along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?  
    Ibex also live on Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Morning is the best time to be in with a chance of catching sight of the impressive ibex.   • How do you get to Ferleiten wildlife park?  
    Ferleiten wildlife park is located beneath the fee-payable Grossglockner High Alpine road, right at the Ferleiten cash point. If you are coming from Bruck-Fusch, the wildlife park is right in front of the cash point.   • What hiking options are available along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and into the neighbouring mountains? 
    Leisurely walking paths, short and extended hikes along with challenging high Alpine tours are located along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. It’s all possible; after all, the mountains in the Hohe Tauern National Park are peppered with a network of hiking, educational nature, themed and easy trails which span many kilometres in length and which start right on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.   • Is there a hiking guide with tours, for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? 
    Yes, there is the Rother hiking guide which has 65 selected tours starting on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. A hiking guide, incl. detailed hiking map, is available at cash points, in the Grossglockner shops on site and also in the online Grossglockner shop.
Gamsgrubenweg
  • Is the Gamsgrubenweg accessible?

    The Gamsgrubenweg is currently only accessible until the exit for tunnel 6. From this point, the Gamsgrubenweg is officially closed. Walking the trail from the last tunnel is only possible for Alpinists who have a protective helmet and professional safety equipment, and at their own risk.

    The culinary offer available along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is as variety-packed as the landscape and experiences themselves, and visitors can enjoy being indulged in the gastronomic businesses all along the road. All the businesses along the road can be found here.

  • Can you stay the night in Alpine inns and hotels along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? 
    Yes, there are various overnight stay options available along the road. All the businesses along the road can be found here.

  • Can camper vans/mobile home stay parked up over night along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? Can you stay the night in your car up there?  
    No, camping or staying the night in your car or camper van/mobile home is not permitted, since the road is within a conservation protected area (Hohe Tauern National Park). There are however campsites in the neighbouring towns of Fusch, Bruck and Heiligenblut.

  • Where can I charge an E-car on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? 

    The Glockner ePower charging points along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road – as well as all the AC- and DC charging stations (fast chargers) ensure you enjoy consistently secure charging. All the charging points can be found in our interactive map. 

  • What charging stations are available along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? 
    The new, dynamic charging stations are from EnerCharge, a charging infrastructure supplier from the nearby Carinthian town of Kötschach-Mauthen. EnerCharge charging columns ensure very convenient charging, with smart use and an easy operating concept. The charging process is easy to implement and is available at all new Glockner ePower charging stations, with easy and direct payment available via debit and credit card, as well as with 250 contract partners.
BIKE & BUS
  • Can I travel by bus on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road too?   

    From 29th May until 29th September 2024 you can travel every Wednesday – every Friday in July and August too – on the Glocknerbus from various start points to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Expert, experienced National Park rangers will be on board the Glocknerbus too and during the journey, they provide interesting stories about the flora and fauna along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and can also answer any questions. Private bus operators offer tours too. All the information for bus travel can be found here

  • Are dogs permitted in the Glocknerbus?
    Yes, for a fee, you can take a dog with you. When making a booking via telephone or by e-mail please state this – bookings for dogs cannot be effected online.  

  • What does it cost to travel on a tour bus?  
    The bus tariff depends on the number of people actually being conveyed in the bus, the bus driver and the travel guide are not included. There is no special fee for a bus. All information for bus tour operators can be found here.

  • Can you ride your bike up Grossglockner High Alpine Road outside the opening hours? 
    No, outside opening hours there is no journeys are permitted for all means of transport.

  • Where ist the highest point of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?  

    The highest point of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the Edelweiss-Spitze (not suitable for buses) at 2571 metres, the pass on the am Hochtor is at 2504 meters. However, the highlight of the Grossglockner High Alpine road, is definitely Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe at 2369 metres altitude. Explore the highlights along Austria’s loveliest panorama road. 

  • Which mountain is 3798 metres high? 
    The Grossglockner is 3798 metres high, making it Austria’s highest mountain. 
      
  • Does a gondola operate up the Grossglockner?  
    No, there is no gondola or lift up operating up to the Grossglockner. The Grossglockner (3798 m) is only suitable for experienced mountain climbers who have appropriate equipment. The routes which proceed up to the highest summits in Austria can be found here.

  • Can you drive in a car up to the summit of the Grossglockner?  
    No, you can only walk or hike up to the summit of the Grossglockner (high Alpine tour). You can drive in a car up to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2369 m) and from there, observe the summits of the Grossglockner, the Pasterze glacier and the surrounding mountains.
      
  • Are there petrol stations along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?  
    No, the only petrol stations are in the towns around the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, in Fusch (Salzburg) and in Heiligenblut (Carinthia). All the E-charging stations along the Großglockner High Alpine road can be found on our interactive map.

  • Where do you get information on what the weather will be like during an excursion on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?
    All weather forecasts are never 100-percent accurate. It may be, especially in high Alpine areas, that the weather can change from one minute to the next. So before your excursion, please take a look at the latest weather sites or apps to get information about the forecast. You can follow and take a look at the current weather on our various webcams. 

  • Can drones flown in the Grossglockner High Alpine Road are?  
    According to general statutory rules these are permitted along the road. However, the conservation protection area around the Hohe Tauern National Park is very close to the road and drone flights are not permitted in that area. Flying over people and vehicles and taking pictures of them is also not permitted. For special authorization for the conservation area, please contact the Hohe Tauern National Park direct.

  • Do you have to attach the ‘Glockner’-G-sticker to the car windscreen or on the motorbike?  
    No, you don’t have to! The sticker is a little gift and a memento of your excursion on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. We would however be delighted if you were to affix the Glockner-G to your vehicle.  

  • Can you order the Glockner-G sticker if you have lost the one you were given?  
    Simply send an e-mail to info@grossglockner.at

  • Can you stargaze along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is that allowed?  
    Due to conservation protection regulations, wild camping and other iterations of it are not permitted along the road – this also applies to camper vans and mobile homes. However it is possible to stay the night in one of the accommodation providers that are located directly on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and then you can enjoy some stargazing.  

  • Can you take a dog with you on an excursion to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road? 
    Yes of course! Dogs are very welcome on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. All the key information about an excursion with your four-legged friend can be found here.
      
  • Can I watch the snow clearance work?
    It is not possible for you to participate in any snow clearance work. Videos and pictures can be found in our media library and in our YouTube channel.

  • Are there animals grazing along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road?
    The Grossglockner High Alpine Road proceeds through extensive Alpine pasture areas – in some sections it even goes through meadows. With that in mind, you should drive at an appropriately slow speed in your car, motorbike and push bike, and also be on the look out for animals. Even when you are out walking on the hiking trails and paths around the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, be aware that you may come across freely roaming cattle, including cows, sheep and even wild animals!
